Maiden Louisiana:  Works Made in Louisiana by Women Sculptors

A Celebration of Louisiana artists during the

ISC Fall Symposium in New Orleans

Exuberant and full blooded, Maiden Louisiana draws the viewer into a strange and fantastic universe.  Confronted by a tree with chattering teeth as they enter, the audience negotiates through this alchemical world, stopping off at “The House of Trade” where they are invited to trade bodily elements with the artist. While the materials and processes used in the show range from cast iron to kinetics, common threads runs through the work. Dreamlike forms arise from the merging of plant and animal, human and mechanical.  The body is explored with both darkness and humor, the result is a charged visceral

experience for the audience.

From October 30 – November 27, 2004 The Big Top Gallery and Event Space is pleased to present the gallery exhibition Maiden Louisiana:  Works Made in Louisiana by Women Sculptors.  This exhibition is guest curated by artist and educator Chicory Miles and coincides with the International Sculpture Center’s Fall Symposium which will meet in New Orleans from October 29-31, 2004.  Maiden Louisiana includes works by nine Louisiana artists (see list above). Two artists’ receptions will take place to inaugurate the show.  On Saturday, October 30 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm The Big Top welcomes IFC sculpture symposium participants and the general public to view the exhibition.  And on Saturday, November 6, 2004 The Big Top will participate in the monthly, first-Saturday Gallery Walk with a reception from 7:00 - 11:00 pm.  The November reception will feature music by New Orleans’ rocker Lynn Drury.  Both receptions are free and open to the public.
