3 Ring Circus’ The Big Top Gallery 3 Ring Circus is proud and pleased to present FRAMED, new works by photographer Shannon Brinkman and painter Suzanne E. Saunders. The show will be on view at The Big Top, 1638 Clio Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, from September 20, 2003 through October 11, 2003, with an opening reception on Saturday, September 20th, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and an Art for Arts' Sake Reception on Saturday, October 4th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Shannon Brinkman's tools are camera, bike and passionate energy. "The challenge for me is to sit by and watch, so I dive in" This exhibition includes a variety of portraits (some self-portraits) and musically-centered atmospheric images in living, lush color or rich multi-toned black and white, some framed in century-old frames sharing depth and a special timelessness. New Orleans is her home and music a staple of her existence, and this show will include portraits from Preservation Hall from their newest album 'Shake That Thing'. "Preservation Hall feels as spiritual as church with any one night of the week filled with an international crowd. The walls speak jazz music. You can see where the upright bass player brushes the wall night after night with the motion of playing." Brinkman is a nationally acclaimed sport horse photographer. She is the USEA (United States Eventing Association) cover photographer and is sought by riders and sponsors alike for her artistic action images. In 2002 she photographed the world championships in Spain which resulted in the USEA magazine winning top-place for sport horse coverage. This year she will be the official photographer at the Pan-Am games in Maryland for three-day eventers. Last year she trimmed down her horse shows so she could devote more time to musicians and her understanding of the great music emanating from the great New Orleans. Brinkman has been curated into many museum and gallery art shows. Suzanne E. Saunders’ new works are embroiled in mystery. Does life end at death? Or does life begin at death? Some of the pieces celebrate afterlife and other works celebrate present life. With these questions in mind there is definitely a combination of thought attacking these canvases. "For me, it is all about the paint." This is Saunders' passion in life, to paint until she drops dead. (And maybe even after she's dead!) But for her it is also about the interpretation of the viewer. "I paint with the audience in mind, in addition to painting for myself. I like to think of how the viewer will react to such pieces, and I want their minds to open to new ideas or at least different ways of looking at old hat ideas. My work is also very much about technique. I like an exciting attack approach to the canvas. I believe if the artist is highly excited about their work, other people will be too. I am very excited about this latest collection of work." The new photographs are part of an ongoing project based on the ideas that the self is art. Saunders has literally become her paintings. These photos are truly intriguing. This is a first showing of her photos. Saunders has exhibited in and around the Southeast for the past ten years. She has had many gallery and alternative space exhibitions, and is very involved in the art progression of New Orleans, having painted murals and incorporating many New Orleans themes in her work.
